Maya, The Pixelated Girl

Shockleewebpic_mayapixelatedgirlIn South West England in the city of Bristol, there is a little girl at the Temple Meads train station standing on the platform. At first glance, you might wonder if she is alone or lost but as you move closer in her direction, you might think your vision is going as she appears to look distorted…and pixelated.

Meet Maya, a life-size sculpture by artist Luke Jerram, who modeled Maya after his own daughter. With help from the Machine Vision Laboratory [MVL] at the University of West of England and the Centre for Fine Print Research [CFPR], Luke scanned and 3D modeled his little girl using an Xbox Kinect and assembled the sculpture from waterjet cut sheets of aluminum and applying 5,000, square 12mm stickers by hand.

The process was documented in the video below. Maya is a permanent artwork at the Bristol Temple Meads train station so if you’re ever in the area, no, you’re not bugging.
